Presentation: Analytic Interviewing® Detecting Deception in the Blink of an Eye

Speakers: Tab Cooper & Mary Daugherty

Presentation Description: Forty years of research in human deception and detection by psychotherapist have identified the skills investigators must develop to be highly effective interviewers and detectors of deception. Experienced intelligence officers, undercover agents and homicide investigators collaborated with some of the 20th centuries leading researchers in psychotherapy to develop this powerful interviewing approach.

The 1990's have been called the decade of the brain. During that period, more was learned about the brain and the mind than the entire previous history of neuroscience and psychology. Advances in technology allowed scientists to directly record the activity of single neurons or group of neurons and relate that activity to specific mental states. Unprecedented work was conducted regarding the cognitive process, emotions and the impact of human interaction on the human mind, resulting in significant discoveries and applications for investigators. Researchers in neuroscience are confirming why the Analytic Interviewing approach is so powerful.

Analytic Interviewing motivates individuals through building trust and rapport to provide detailed and truthful information while developing the interviewer's own "lie detector." This approach is a significant paradigm shift from traditional training in interviewing. Analytic Interviewing has powerful universal application well beyond interviewing criminal suspects.

This course develops specific nonverbal, social intelligent and emotional intelligent skills that we as humans are genetically predisposed to learning and using in human interaction. Psychotherapist have found that the skills taught in this course must be taught in a specific sequence for participants to learn the advanced skills required to interview and detect deception. This course has been streamed lined to maximize the learning curve in the least amount of time. The curriculum includes techniques used to train doctoral students in counseling psychology to help participants experience and learn specific skills essential for reading people.

Detecting deception in the blink of an eye? This course trains participants to read facial expressions that occur in 1/25 to 1/2 second: called microexpressions. Microexpressions reveal hidden emotions or deception. The ability to detect microexpressions gives the interviewer powerful insight into what the interviewee is feeling and thinking. Asking questions about what triggered microexpressions, in combination with other specific techniques, can provide invaluable information and psychologically trigger a flood of detailed, truthful information.

Analytic Interviewing provides investigators and undercover agents the advanced interpersonal skills and confidence to fully realize their potential in quickly and accurately assessing people and situations, managing the interview process, and obtaining accurate, detailed, truthful information.

Tab Cooper is quickly becoming internationally recognized for his skills-based approach to modifying participant behavior to enhance a wide range of interpersonal skills, personally and professionally.

During his 20-year law enforcement career, Tab served as patrol officer, investigator, instructor and commander. He is a graduate of the Leadership and Command College (LCC) and held a Master Peace Officer certification through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He later joined the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) as a Project Coordinator developing and coordinating the first mandatory police chief management and leadership training program in the United States. He was responsible for developing and coordinating leadership and management training for police administrators from over 1080 Texas police departments.

After LEMIT, Tab worked with Dr. Stephen Sampson, renowned Counseling Psychologist, social intelligence instructor, and protégé of Dr. Carl Rogers and Dr. John "Jack" Blakeman. Tab traveled with Dr. Sampson throughout the United States for four years assisting in training seminars teaching techniques to enhance social and emotional intelligence skills.

Tab earned a B.S. in Law Enforcement and Police Science and a Masters degree in Business Administration from Sam Houston State University. He also completed numerous hours in post-graduate courses and coauthored a number of research articles in business communication.

He continued his professional development as a Business Communication lecturer at Sam Houston State University. Tab taught a variety of business communication courses during his seven years with the College of Business Administration applying his experience, advanced training and post-graduate education in the fields of management, leadership, communication studies, business communication and counseling psychology.

Mary Daugherty is a retired Senior Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF). During Mary’s 27 years of Federal service, she was assigned to the Violent Gang Task Force and applied investigative and interviewing skills as case agent and in undercover capacities investigating Asian Organized Crime, Jamaican Posses, Bandidos Motorcycle Gang, Texas Syndicate Prison Gang and Mexican Mafia. An 18-month investigation involving the arrest of 120 members of the Texas Syndicate resulted in Special Agent Daugherty and two other agents being recognized as "Officers of the Year" by the 100 Club of Houston. During her later years with ATF, Mary also served as ATF Intelligence Officer assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF) and investigated members of Domestic Terroristic Organizations. She was a Crisis Negotiator for ATF and a volunteer with the Crisis Hotline Intervention Program in Houston, Tx.

As an instructor with Analytic Interviewing, Mary worked with Dr. Paul Ekman, Dr. Mark Frank, Dr. Maureen O’Sullivan and Dr. Ed Geiselman learning and applying the latest and most advanced research available in interviewing techniques. Researchers determined that Mary is capable of detecting deception better than 99.99923% of the 13,000 law enforcement officers, judges and psychotherapist tested, placing Mary is part of an elite group of individuals known as the Wizards. As a certified instructor for the Department of the Treasury and Department of Justice, Mary instructed interviewing and undercover courses for 20 years at Glynco, GA. and trained thousands of law enforcement officers at numerous conferences and training programs.
